Matthew B. Cullen
Investing In a Process Focused Practice
Matthew B. Cullen (he/they, él/elle) is a theatre director, producer, and administrator born in Bogotá, Colombia, adopted, then raised in Buffalo, NY. They are a Lin-Manuel Miranda Family Artistic and General Management Fellow currently living in Spanish Harlem.
The dream is to collaboratively cultivate a community of administrators, artists, and audiences alike around art that initiates action. To do so, Matthew is building a set of artistic, business, and management skills so that they may one day be a co-artistic director of a theatre company that develops new works at all stage.
Their process is focused on disrupting oppressive and harmful practices by centering health, equity, and community. The goal is collective liberation by investing in the process focused practice. To learn more about their process and principles, check out The Groundwork.
As a director, Matthew spent a year studying under U.K. directors Robert Icke and Lyndsey Turner which provided his foundation. Matthew is currently developing CHICANA LEGEND and SUPER CILANTRO GIRL, both by Alexis Elisa Macedo. In the fall, he assisted Jared Mezzochi on THE WIND AND THE RAIN Off Broadway at En Garde Arts while Matthew was directing LETTERS I WILL NEVER SEND YOU by performer/writer Angelica McEwan. They are an alumni of Kennedy Center's Directing Intensive, Wingspace Directing Mentorship, and Irish Classical Theatre's Directing Apprenticeship.
In the world of producing, Matthew has led two indie productions in New York: LETTERS I WILL NEVER SEND YOU and PLAGUE PLAY by Erin Proctor. Additionally, he was an assistant on AZUL: A Bilingual Musical which sold out 54 Below and Joe's Pub. Since most of Matthew’s experience is in the non-profit realm, they spent spring 2024 attending the Business of Broadway classes to learn about the world of commercial producing. They are excited to continue their education and practice with commercial producing.
In the administrative realm, Matthew has spent 3 years working management level positions regionally and Off Broadway. Recently, he was accepted as a Brenna Thomas' mentee in Tom O'Connor Consulting Group's All Rise Initiative for rising BIPOC administrators.
In September, Matthew finished a year long fellowship through the Lin-Manuel Miranda Family Fund. They began as the General Management Fellow and Company Manager at the Vineyard Theatre on their productions of SCENE PARTNERS by John J. Caswell Jr., and RUSSIAN TROLL FARM by Sarah Gancher. They were then the Artistic Fellow at Repertorio Español assisting on their production of LA LLAMADA. Previously, he was the Company Manager at Chautauqua Theater Company, an Artistic Associate at Latiné Musical Theatre Lab, amongst a variety of other positions held through his education.
While Matthew does not own any pets (sad), they have happily had their mustache for two years now.
