Born in Bogotá, Colombia then adopted, Matthew B. Cullen (he/they, él/elle) is a theatre director and creative producer now living in Spanish Harlem. They are a Lin-Manuel Miranda Family Artistic and General Management Fellow, and a lover of blueberries.

Their goal is to cultivate a community of administrators, artists, and audiences alike around a process focused practice. To do so, they are building a set of artistic, business, and management skills to one day be a co-artistic director of a theatre company devoted to new work while continuing a career as a director.

Their process is rooted in care, technique, curiosity, courage, and generosity. They lead with kindness, deep listening, and by investing in a process focused practice. To learn more about their process and principles, check out The Groundwork.

As a director, Matthew's foundation was shaped by a year of studying with U.K. directors Robert Icke and Lyndsey Turner. Matthew has directed new work in various indie spaces and festivals while developing new work with his producing company, mbc theatrical r&d. In his downtime, he is generating devised work using Moment Work. He is an alum of the Kennedy Center Directing Intensive, Wingspace Directing Mentorship, and Irish Classical Theatre's Directing Apprenticeship. While Matthew does not own any pets yet, they have happily had their mustache for three whole years now. Except for that one Thanksgiving. But that's a whole other story.
