Shades of Blue: a collection of moments
Self Produced ~ Producer, a Director ~ May 1st
Fall 2020, I took Devising with Dan Lendzian. I quickly fell in love with this class, the creative process behind devising, and simply the idea of building original theatre. A good friend, Molly Brooke, was also in the class. We often work together and both had a love for the class, so we brainstormed different ways we could create a devised project outside of class.
October 2020, we reached out to 5 poet friends, Julia Marie Black, Ashley Halm, Jack Bausch, Alexa Kartschoke, and Niklas Dahlen to inquire about using their poetry for a piece. They all graciously agreed. After combing through selections of their poems, we narrowed it down to 13 poems we wanted to use for this "Indie Devising Project", as we called it then. Due to me and Molly's busy schedules and desire to collaborate with friends, we brought on Tori Koszegi, Delicia Holder, Tiffani Robinson, and Krystian Masiewicz as other directors and choreographers to bring these 13 poems to life.
My main piece in Shades of Blue was Orion by Alexa Kartschoke. This poem explored the idea of the empowerment the night sky can have on the beholder. When bringing this piece to life, it was important to me that there be nothing between the Speaker of the poem and the stars. With the trust of a wonderful ensemble, we rehearsed and filmed Orion in one night. Pictured to the left is a shot from the first hour of rehearsal as the "Light Ensemble" explored different formations.
